Everything I do feels like a silent protest.
Jannik Abel
It´s not what I make that mattes the most.
It´s how and why.
Jannik Abel is a Norwegian artist that lives in a wild forest outside of Oslo. Abels works with to distinctly different media, large installations and performances and photography. They have exhibited extensivly in Norway and internationally in museums, galleries, nature and the public sphere.
Abel was born into the arts, her great great grandparents started Norways first gallery in 1864:
I didn´t choose art, Abel say, art choose me.
Abel has an artistic practice that is as much about the way they have chosen to live as it is about making.
I make from whatever is around me, almost always from nature. I live in wild forest close to river, and this river proveds alot of materials. I gather and then create. I also make in an outdoor studio right next to the river, this contact with natrue is key to my practice. When Abels artwork has been exhibited it goes back to nature. They carry the pieces back into the forest and it is returned to the land.
I work with this in mind: It´s not what I make that mattes the most. It´s how and why.
In a world where how things look is more important than the content and context I am always going to do it differently.
I only work with material that are friendly to all, and that can be returned to the land. I make no waste in my productions, what is cut of the wood I collect goes back to heating my studio.
Since 2012 Abel have exhibited outdoors in large Land Art projects and stayed outside the gallery spaces almost completely.
This is about to change, Abels largest installations will be shown at Kunstneres Hus in Oslo opening Januar 10th 2025.
